This is the Canterbury Cross sitting on top of the Martyrs Memorial.
This is in memory of the forty one Kentish Martyrs who were burned at the stake on this spot in the reign of Queen Mary between 1555 and 1558.
These Martyrs earned the Martyrs crown. By their heroic fidelity they secured for succeeding generations the priceless blessing of religious freedom. http://www.machadoink.com/Martyrs%20Memorial.htm
